An endless belt (15) passes over front (1) and rear (13) guiding rollers and is entrained by a third roller (6) exerting a pressure on this belt (15), the fabric or the paper being shrunk by the contraction of the belt (15) after its passage in the constriction formed between the presser roller (6) and the front roller (1). The front roller (1) is mounted in blocks (2) which are supported on horizontal slides (3) in order to be displaced by screws (4). The presser roller (6) is, in turn, mounted in blocks (7) which are supported on vertical slides (8) in order to be displaced by pistons (9) controlled by micrometric stops (12). By displacing the front roller (1) and the presser roller (6), it is possible to vary the arc of contact of the presser roller (6) as well as the angle of the resultant force between the front roller (1) and the presser roller (6), in order to obtain a given shrinkage with a reduced pressure as well as a desired finish for the fabric or paper. <IMAGE>
