PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful for the preparation of high purity alpha-naphthol, by the liquid-phase oxidation of naphthalene with O2 in a carboxylic acid solvent using a cobalt carboxylate as a catalyst and an acetaldehyde as a co-oxidizing agent. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-naphthol ester is obtained by the liquid-phase oxidation of naphthalene with molecular oxygen in a carboxylic acid solvent (especially preferably acetic acid) in the presence of a carboxylic acid salt of cobalt as a catalyst and acetaldehyde or paraldehyde as a co-oxidizing agent, under normal pressure or positive pressure, at 70-100 deg.C. The carboxylic acid salt of cobalt is e.g. cobalt acetate, cobalt propionate, etc. The concentration of the cobalt salt in the reaction system is 0.05-0.5mol/l. Since acetaldehyde or paraldehyde is oxidized to acetic acid by the reaction, the economical efficiency of the process can be improved by recovering the acetic acid. The process is easily controllable in an industrial scale. |
