During the reaction of a reactive gas on a catalyst, heat is produced or heat is consumed. A heat measurement provides information concerning the amount of reactive gas present. This measurement is as instantaneous as possible if the temperature sensor has a low thermal mass. This, however, makes it more susceptible to environmental influences, and its output becomes smaller. It is proposed according to the invention to arrange in a measuring chamber two thermally separated temperature sensors having as similar a design as possible. Only one of these two temperature sensors carries a catalyst and thus serves as the measuring sensor, while the other temperature sensor acts as a reference sensor.
