Apparatus for sealing filled preserving jars using a rod which can be inserted in the gap between the lid and the material to be preserved, is provided with steam outlet apertures and is connected to a steam generator via a steam feeding pipe. The rod (6) forms the bent-over part of an L-shaped tube (4) which is connected in a vertically adjustable and/or twistable fashion to a boiler which acts as a steam generator. The steam boiler is preferably situated inside a casing (10) which also contains a telescopic guide (14) in which the tube (4) with the rod (6) is arranged in a vertically adjustable and/or twistable fashion. <IMAGE>
