A plurality of auxiliary containers (1) of different size are made available, together with loose shielding material (4), to one ultimate storage container (2) each, with a specific shielding function. The auxiliary container (1) inserted into the receiving space (3) surrounded by the ultimate storage container (2) contains the radioactive material (A). Located in the interspace, ensured by spacers (5), between the inserted auxiliary container (1) and the inner wall of the ultimate storage container (2) is shielding material (4) whose layer thickness and corresponding radiation-damping function are in an inverse relationship relative to the size of the auxiliary container (1) inserted. Highly radioactive material is filled into a small auxiliary container (2) and covered with an appropriately thick layer of the shielding material (4). Use is made of a large auxiliary container (1) and of relatively little shielding material (4) for slightly radioactive material (A). <IMAGE> |
