The duration of the spark in a spark ignition internal combustion engine is controlled in relation to some engine characteristic, for example, engine speed, by the switching of a thyristor across the primary winding of the ignition coil. The spark is established by mechanical contacts opened and closed by a cam driven by the engine. Falling current in the ignition coil generates the spark which is distributed to the spark plugs. An electronic circuit processes at least one engine characteristic and generates a negative going potential at the cathode of a thyristor which is connected by its gate to the supply side of the coil and its anode to the contact breaker side of the coil. The thyristor dumps the current from the ignition coil, cutting off the spark.
|
