The potter's apparatus has a wheel (3), rotatably mounted on a stand base (11), for receiving the potter's clay. Attached to the stand base (11) is a drive mechanism which can be actuated intermittently by means of a flexible drawing member (31) and can be coupled to the wheel (3) by means of a free-wheel (13, 17, 23, 53 to 57). The free-wheel comprises a normally open rotary clutch (13, 17, 23) with a first coupling element (17, 23), which can be rotated by means of the drawing member (31), and with a second coupling element (13), which is connected in a rotationally fixed manner to the wheel (3). A clutch switch (53 to 57), which responds to the rotary movement of the first coupling element (17, 23), closes the rotary clutch (13, 17, 23), at least during part of the rotary movement of the first coupling element, by axially displacing by means of sloping surfaces on a first sleeve (23), driven by the drawing member (31), an axially adjacent second sleeve (17). The wheel (3) is consequently driven only when there is acceleration of the sleeve (23) and is otherwise freely rotatable in both directions. <IMAGE>
