PURPOSE:To decrease the quantity of sputtering which is developed due to ionic shocks, and increase the luminance of a hollow electrode lamp by connecting a hollow electrode through a condenser, to a high-frequency power source which provides an electric field developing electrons the average traveling speed of which satisfies a specific equation. CONSTITUTION:A hollow electrode 1, and an electrode 2 opposed to the electrode 1 are installed in a discharge tube 3 having a light-taking-out window 11. The electrode 1 is connected through a condenser 5, to a high-frequency power source 6, which satisfies the relation of f>2Vd/d when (f) represents the frequency, (d) represents the distance between the electrodes 1 and 2, and (Vd) represents the average traveling speed of electrons developed by the electric field. Both the electrode 2 and the other end of the source 6 are earthed. In addition, the electrode 1 is provided with a means of cooling with water. Consequently, when the frequency (f) satisfies the above specific relation, since electrons can't run between the electrodes 1 and 2 and are catched during the half cycle of the electric field, the luminous efficiency of a hollow electrode lamp can be improved, the quantity of sputtering can be reduced, and the life of the lamp can be increased. |
