A process for treating or preventing cardiac diseases in mammals, which process consists in administering to the mammal a short-acting β-blocking compound of the formula where R can be lower alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; n can be a number from 0 to approx. 10; x can be a number from 1 to 3; Ar can be substituted or unsubstituted aromatic; R1 can be lower alkyl or aralkyl, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. Previously unknown compounds which have a short-acting β-adrenergic blocking effect are also described.
