PURPOSE:To remarkably reduce the probability of misreading by starting time counting from a point of time that a time counting means is allowed to enter data and checking the presence or absence of white margines before a start code in accordance with a checked result whether time required up to the detection of a black bar is a sufficient long time or not. CONSTITUTION:The time counting means 5 is allowed to start time counting from a point of time capable of inputting data, and only when the counted from the time counting start time up to the input of black bars B1-B3 is a sufficiently long time exceeding a prescribed time, the demodulation of a bar code is enabled. Checking whether the time counted from the data input enabled time up to the input of the black bars B1-B3 is equal to checking whether sufficient long white margines W1, W2 exist before the black bars B1-B3. Since the modulation of the bar code is enabled only when the sufficiently long white margines W1, W2 exist before the black bars B1-B3, misreading such that bar arrangement other than a start code is read as a start code can be removed and the probability of misreading can be sharply reduced.
