PURPOSE:To prepare ethylene glycol, easily, in high yield, by the hydroformylation of formaldehyde using ruthenium and a trivalent organic phosphorus compound as catalysts. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is prepared by reacting formaldehyde with CO and H2 in a solvent e.g. methanol using ruthenium and a trivalent organic phosphorus compound as catalysts, perf. under 100-400atm at 50-400 deg.C, esp. 150-300 deg.C. The molar ratio of CO to H2 is pref. selected within the range of 1:5-5:1. The trivalent organic phosphorus compound is e.g. triphenylphosphine, and its amount is 0.01-100mol, pref. 0.1-10mol per 1mol of ruthenium. |
