In a four-wheeled go-cart of the type having a rigid pedal axle 6 at the front for direct front-wheel drive and a pivotal steering cross-member 10 for free-running rear wheels 12 at the rear, a brake system is integrated with the operating system used to swivel the cross- member. This system in a known manner comprises a pair of levers 15, 16, which are rod-connected to the respective sides of the cross-member 10, and the system according to the invention incorporates a wheel brake 28, which is activated when the associated lever is pushed forwards, but not when it is pulled backwards for swivelling the cart. This creates a simple and robust brake system, which with spring loading can furthermore act as automatic parking brake. In a modified embodiment the wheel brake 40 is fitted in connection with the front drive wheel 4 in such a way that the brake is self- activating in the event of incipient backward rolling, but self-releasing in forward travel; by means of a handle 44, however, the brake can be partially raised to permit controlled reversing and applied for braking in forward travel. This is a simple way of countering the possibility of uncontrolled backward rolling, which in itself is dangerous for the feet, and this system may possibly be adequate as a service brake, so that the aforementioned wheel brake 28 connected to the steering levers can be omitted. <IMAGE>
