The burner for an oil fired industrial furnace has a cylindrical fuel chamber (1) with porous walls (2). The fuel chamber can slide inside a heat exchanger in the form of a ceramic tube (6). The heat exchanger is enclosed in an outer tube (7) which is connected to the air supply by a pipe (8). The fuel is supplied by a pump (P) which delivers it into a lower cylinder (14). The pressure of the fuel acts on the undersurface (4) of the fuel chamber and forces it upwards against the force of a spring (24). The fuel flows through an orifice (26) into the fuel chamber and through the porous walls into the ceramic heat exchanger, where it mixes with air and burns in the separate region (9). When the fuel supply is cut off, the fuel chamber is withdrawn so that no after- burning can occur. An electric heating element (10) around the heat exchanger facilitates a cold start.
