REMOVING SULFUR AND BENEFICIATING COAL

Processes for decreasing the sulfur content of coal and facilitating economic removal of sulfur contaminant from the treated coal. Desulfurization is undertaken by oxidizing sulfur values of coal under ambient conditions of temperature and pressure to produce sulfates. The sulfates are removed from the coal by chemical reaction while producing commercially usable by-products. Treatment in accordance with the invention also provides an increase in BTU content and a decrease in ash content of low-quality coal.
