The mechanism couples an inert mass, such as a firearm, to a supporting base, such as a vehicle. The mechanism allows the firearm to tilt in relation to the base about one or more axes under the action of a drive without a self-locking characteristic. Between the mass and the base there is a gear train whose output is coupled to the mass, and which can transmit torque to the mass in both directions of rotation, but has a self-locking action the opposite way. The input of the gear train when the tilting drive is operating can be driven in the direction of relative movement between the base and the mass.
