A precisely controlled method is established for separating the balloon of a balloon catheter in a blood vessel for the purpose of producing an artificial embolism so as to cut off the blood supply to some abnormal tissue. This is achieved by using an electric heating element at the junction where the balloon is attached to the catheter. The thermoplastic adhesive at that junction may thus be heated when the balloon is in the desired position. A balloon is attached to a catheter by means of some thermoplastic adhesive in a region. A heating element in that region is supplied through connecting wires in the subdivided catheter.
