A movable vice 27 which feeds a workpiece M to a fixed vice at the cutting zone has a left hand jaw 33 movable to a large extent relative to the right hand jaw 31 so that the machine can cater for workpieces of different sizes. Each jaw can also be moved away from the other to a smaller limited extent when the movable vice 27 returns, without touching the workpiece M, to the original position of the movable vice 27. Movement of the jaws 31 and 33 is effected hydraulically when fluid is fed to chambers 79a, 79b on each side of a piston 95 and a chamber 129a on one side of a piston 135 against the action of a spring 141. <IMAGE>
