<p>A laboratory hood or manipulation cabinet is claimed which provides a space with sterile atmos. in which biological media such as cell cultures can be handled. The cabinet is box-shaped and air-tight. An air circulation system is fitted which extracts air from the cabinet, and passes it through an external germicidal tube equipped with ultraviolet, ionising and/or infrared radiation emitters to destroy micro-organisms etc. air discharged by the germicidal tube is delivered into the cabinet. Air extracted from the cabinet can be exhausted to atmos. instead of being passed into the germicidal tube-this results in the cabinet space operating at a pressure below atmospheric. Air can be drawn into the germicidal tube directly from atmos. to create a pressure above atmospheric inside the cabinet. The cabinet is for use in biological and microbiological laboratories to provide a sterile atmosphere in which cell cultures etc. can be manipulated. The cabinet offers protection against all types of microorganisms including viruses. No filter is used so there are no problems of progressive filter blockage and potential hazard when cleaning or renewing filter elements. The germicidal treatment is carried out outside the cabinet so the interior is free for manipulation. The whole of the interior is sterile.</p> |
