An apparatus for lifting, upturning and emptying a waste container 7 on a refuse collection truck 1 is equipped with means of catching the container 7 when this on the ground is run into contact with the apparatus. The apparatus then performs a slow and brief lifting movement once a correct engagement has been achieved. The correct engagement is furthermore assured by the brief lifting, due to the fact that hook-shaped 3, 14 parts are used for the engagement. <IMAGE>
