Spectrometer heated gas inlet - has coiled heater filament held at minus 3 KV W.R.T. inlet tube

A gas inlet for a spectrometer is esp. for photoelectron spectrometers with an inlet which can be heated. The inlet heater can be operated continuously, including during actual measurements. A heater filament (12) is coiled around the inlet tube (10). A d.c voltage is maintained between the filament and the tube. The voltage accelerates electrons encited by the filament in the direction of the tube and thus heats it up. The filament is a bifilar coil and is held at a negative potential of 3 KV. The tube is connected to earth. The filament coil has between three and six windings. It and the heated section of tube are contained within a chamber whose walls are held at the same voltage as the coil.
