An arc welding head for operating in a deep and narrow slot in an inert gas atmos to weld very thick workpieces consists of a holder for the electrode and for a wedge-shaped nozzle which receives the inert gas. Its sharp edge is turned towards the electrode. At least one horizontal row of holes and vertical rows of them in the side walls and along the bottom are provided for the escape of the arc shielding gas. - This eliminates the risk of the nozzle being clogged by splashes of molten metal and of splashes accumulating in the weld pool of molten metal. The weld is of better quality and the productivity is improved.
