[Also in Division B3] An annular disc 9 for an edge filter, Fig. 1 (not shown), has projections 11 on one face, which engage the flat face 12 of an adjacent disc to define radial passageways 13, and an axially extending peripheral ridge 16. In use a stack of such discs are mounted on a fluted stem 5 inside a casing, Fig. 1 (not shown), and a layer of diatomaceous silica is formed on the cylindrical surface of the stack. The projections 11 may be rounded or V-shaped, passageways 13 diverging outwards, and may be 0À004 inch high, ridge 16 being #-“ of that height. Discs may be metal (e.g. stainless steel) or plastics, and may be formed by stamping alone, or by stamping followed by machining to circularity, thereby forming burrs on the cylindrical edge 14, one of which is removed and the other reduced to form ridge 16. This construction is stated to facilitate deposition of a uniform layer of filter aid by passing a suspension thereof through the filter at a slow rate.</p> |
