PURPOSE:To form thin iridium oxide film at low cost and to obtain an electrochromic display element having superior color charging and discharging characteristics and high reliability by interposing electrolytic liquid between thin iridium oxide film formed by electrodeposition from aq. alkali contg. an iridium compd. to an anode side and a substrate provided with a counter electrode. CONSTITUTION:Alkaline soln. having 10.0pH is prepd. by adding sodium carbonate to a soln. contg. iridium tetrachloride and oxalic acid. Blue-black thin iridium oxide film 3 is deposited on an electroconductive anode film by electrolyzing the soln. using a glass substrate 1 coated with transparent electroconductive film 2 consisting primarily of iridium oxide having 10OMEGA/cm<2> sheet resistance as anode and gold wire as cathode. Further, a counter electrode 6 comprising carbon fiber is provided together with electrolytic liquid 5 comprising aq. sodium sulfate soln. Charge and discharge of color are executed by impressing electric voltage to between the color charging material of the display element and the counter electrode. Since the color charging film of iridium oxide is obtd. at low cost as described above, a display element having high reliability is obtd. at low cost.
