A gas-permeable polymer membrane for analysis devices is made by coating a metal or glass disc of 30-300 microns thickness on one side with a gas-permeable polymer layer, of 1-25 micron thickness, then perforating the metal or glass disc by removing a series of separate areas to form a sieve. For analysis devices operating on the permeation principle, e.g. where the dissolved oxygen content is to be determined by current measurement or the carbon dioxide content by pH measurement. The composite arrangement provides an adequate area for the highest possible permeation rate, low thickness to give fast response time of the order of a few seconds, and high mechanical strength.
