The device braids a longitudinally moving cable, using a tape unwound from a rotary reel and guided over at least two direction changing rolls from the reel to the cable during braiding. These rolls (6-9) form tape direction changing positions, at least one (8) being adjustable in radial direction by a spring force. The change direction roll is pref. adjustable parallel to the braided cable. The spring force may be adjustable via a coil spring. Alternatively, the roll is adjustable hydraulically, pneumatically, or by centrifugal force. The adjustment path of the roll may be fitted with a scale indicating the spring force. In another embodiment the roll is driven by an electric motor. In such a case it may be fitted with a position detector, controlling the electric motor speed.
