Driving of tunnels, mine galleries etc. is facilitated by a shield assembly, applicable particularly to ground and rock strata of different characteristics. The driving shield is combined with a forward driving machine incorporated in the sand. Esp. in cohesive and stable layers, the shield (10) is pressed forward as a structural entity. It incorporates the driving blades (11) fixed on the support frame (12) against longitudinal displacement. The blades may be lockable in relation to the frame, while the towed abutment (22) is clampable behind blade ends in the excavation area. Presses (13) for individual blades may be hydraulically lockable.
