In the wet desulphurisation of exhaust gases by scrubbing the gas in an absorption tower with the aid of a calcium compound-containing solution, as a result of which a mist entraining desulphurised gas is obtained and the mist is removed from the gas with the aid of a mist eliminator, which contains elements on which the mist impacts and from which it is collected, the elements of the mist eliminator are periodically washed so that during the washing the mist which is also washed out is transported towards the outside of the absorption tower and, if the elements are not washed, the mist collected is returned into the absorption tower.
