1,038,061. Toothed gearing; universal joints. CARRIER CORPORATION. Jan. 24, 1963 [Jan. 29, 1962], No. 3109/63. Headings F2Q and F2U. In a rotary drive transmission, e.g. between an electric motor and a centrifugal compressor, comprising an input shaft 30 and an output shaft 16 carrying meshing double helical gears 31, 40, having central journals running in split bearings 36, 45<SP>1</SP>, respectively, the gear 40 is universally connected to the shaft 16 as by short splines 43 and the bearing 45<SP>1</SP> is located as by a rib 47<SP>1</SP> loosely engaging a groove in a fixed frame 46<SP>1</SP> so that the gear 40 may align itself relative to the gear 31 to give equal loading across the gear surfaces. In Fig. 1, not shown, the bearing 45 is spherically mounted in the frame 46, and the internal splines 43 of the gear 40 engage longer, spherically crowned splies on the shaft 16. |
