PURPOSE:To prepare a secondary alcohol at remarkably improved reaction rate and conversion, in high yield, with suppressed side reactions, by hydrating the corresponding n-olefin in the presence of a solid catalyst using an oxyacid or its derivative as an additive. CONSTITUTION:In the preparation of a sec-alcohol by the hydration of the corresponding n-olefin or a hydrocarbon mixture containing the n-olefin (pref. 3-8C monoolefin hydrocarbons, esp. propylene, butene-1 or butene-2) in the presence of a solid acid esp. a cation exchange resin as a catalyst, the reaction is crried out in the presence of pref. 1-20pts.wt. of an oxyacid (e.g. oxyacetic acid, lactic acid, 3-oxypropionic acid) or its derivative (e.g. beta-propiolactone, methyl glycolate, etc.) per 1pt.wt. of water.
