<p>Apparatus for driving a replaceable reel (10) of magnetic tape (26) comprises a magnetic clamp (16) for holding the reel to a cup-shaped driving member (17). The cup-shaped driving member carries an annular magnet (22) and has a centre pole (21) which extends into the centre of the reel when the reel is positioned in driving engagement. The reel has a central opening, and a circular metal plate (11) is attached to the bottom surface of the reel hub to be attracted by the annular magnet. The centre pole is extended above the surface of the magnet, and provides an easy path for the flux as the members are being separated, because a relatively small air gap is maintained between the extended centre pole and a central opening (13) in the plate. At the point where the members separate, the strength of the magnetic field is not sufficient to adversely affect the information stored on the tape which is wound on the reel. </p> |
