A one-piece sheet metal spring shackle, e.g. for pivotally connecting one end of a leaf spring to the sprung portion of a vehicle, is formed from an originally flat blank (40), Fig. 2, not shown, having projecting ears (42), (44) which are pierced with holes (46), (48), and which are formed, at opposite sides of the blank, at opposite ends thereof. The ends of the blank are sheared to form oblique parallel edges (64), (66) and the ears (42), (44) are bent up to lie in parallel planes which are laterally outwardly offset from the side edges (52), (54). Intermediate portions (56), (58) and wedge-shaped end portions (60), (62) are angularly orientated, Fig. 3 not shown, and a central body portion (50) of the blank is progressively curled upwardly around a mandrel (68) to form a cylindrical portion (70), the intermediate portions (56), (58) being joined together, e.g. by spot or tack-welding. The geometric centres (72), (74) of the holes (46), (48) lie in the plane of the abutting surfaces (76), (78) of the intermediate portions (56), (58) on a common axis (80) parallel to the axis (82) of the mandrel (68). The cylindrical portion 14, as shown, receives an annular bushing 16, 18, 20 which is adapted to receive a bolt (22), Fig. 1, not shown, for securing the shackle to a pair of spaced limbs of a bracket (4) depending from the vehicle frame (6). An eye at one end of a spring (10) is connected to the shackle by a bolt (12) which extends through the eye and the holes 36, 38 in the shackle. |
