A process for o-alkylation of phenols comprises reacting a phenol with an alkanol in the gas phase in the presence of an alumina catalyst having the following properties: alkali metal and alkaline earth metal content < 0.1% SiO2 content <0.1% specific internal 200 - 300m<2>/g surface (BET> acidity 0.1 - 0.2 milli-equivalent of acid/g of catalyst, wherein the catalyst centres do not exhibit acidity at pKa indicator value of 1.5. |
