Practice projectile braked in flight - has nose recess containing metal melted by friction and compressed gas

The reduced range practice projectile is braked in flight by recesses near the nose. These recesses (3,4) are sealed by a metal, melting under the effect of friction-generated heat, and contain compressed gas (6). Typically the metal can form the missile nose cone (5), or alternatively the recess can be open towards the side of the nose. The gas used can be greatly heated by a chemical reaction between halogenised hydrocarbon material, such as C2Br2F4, and magnesium at the end of the recess.
