Bacteria are fixed on porous support elements through which the effluent is percolated. The filter bed comprises a stack of superimposed, horizontal panels. Each panel is made of rigid or semi-rigid material, e.g. polythene or P.V.C. The panel has an outer frame surrounding a louvred interior with parallel, angled slats. Each panel has a central opening so that the stack has a vertical, central riser passage through which effluent can be pumped up. The bottom of the stack stands inside a drainage tank or bund. Each panel is pref. made with a frame which nests in sockets of the frame below, the central openings forming nested joints from the riser passage. The frames are pref. circular or polygonal, esp. square or rectangular. In an assembled stack, each panel is pref. rotated through 90 deg. about the vertical axis of the riser passage w.r.t. the panel below. Each successive quarter turn is in the same direction. The panels form a stack for use as a bacterial filter. The panels are inexpensive, easily assembled to form modular stacks of any required capacity and do not require elaborate foundations. Homogeneous distribution of fine droplets in the percolation zone reduces the incidence of flies.
|
