<p>Non-ferrous metals and alloys, esp. Al,Mg and their alloys, are treated by introduction of 5-5000 (pref.5-800) ppm. La which is free of Ce and other rare earth metals. The La is pref. introduced as an alloy comprising 1-66% La and 99-34% of one or more of Al,Mg,Si,Zn,Fe,Cu and Sn. The treatment is used to reduce the level of impurities, such as oxygen, hydrogen and sulphur, in non-ferrous metals to 0.1ppm. or less and to improve the physical properties of the metals. Lanthanum, which is free of Ce and other rare earth metals, is much more effective than mischmetal, cerium and lanthanum alloyed or mixed with cerium for this treatment.</p> |
