For flame monitoring and ignition, for controlling the operation of hydrocarbon-heated heating installations, and even for automated plant operation, numerous technical solutions are known. These are in most cases complicated automatic systems which are fabricated from heat-sensitive discrete elements, require careful arrangement, heat shielding and cooling or ventilation and frequent exchange of the components or, due to higher voltages (photoelectric cell, ionisation flame failure device), are hazardous to touch. The invention relates to a device which is suitable for the ignition and flame monitoring of such heating installations, and even for plant operation with loose supervision; elements functioning even at a higher operating temperature are used in the device; as sensor, a photoelectric cell made by planar technology from silicon base material is used and, for changing the characteristics thereof, there are components, by means of which the sensitivity range can be adjusted as a function of the wavelengths of the detected radiation. The sensitivity of the device can be adjusted in the same way, and the switching-off speed of the flame monitor and hence the operational safety can be significantly increased in this way by elimination of the radiant effects resulting from the secondary phenomena of the heating.
