The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of o-(2,6-dichloranilino)phenylacetic acid, which has anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic activity, and the salts thereof by oxidative degradation from compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which X is 2-furyl, optionally acetalised 5-formyl-2-furyl or vinyl.
