PURPOSE:To make the deformation of an electrode possible and produce alkali hydroxide with low electrolytic voltage by making the electrode larger in rigidity than a cation exchange membrane provided with a porous layer and flexible and supporting the same by means of conductive bodies having cushion characteristic. CONSTITUTION:A cation exchange membrane 1 provided with a liquid permeable porous layer having no electrode activity on at least one of its surfaces is disposed between anode 2 and cathode 3. At least one of the anode 2 and the cathode 3 is a flexible electrode having voids and having higher rigidity than the membrane 1. Such flexible electrode, for example, the cathode 3 is supported by means of conductive supports having cushion characteristic such as spring 4. The membrane 1 stuck with the porous layer is pressed to the cathode 3 deformed by the conductive supports and deforms to the shape of the anode. Alkali chloride is supplied to the anode 2 side of the opposite electrode in this state, and electrolysis is carried out, whereby alkali hydroxide is obtained. By this method, the electrolytic cell voltage is lowered. |
