PURPOSE:To shorten the production process and to produce the titled steel wire with a little dispersion among the products by moving a stainless steel wire in a pipe having the specific atmosphere under condition of giving it the tension and continuously executing quenching and tempering treatment. CONSTITUTION:Martenstic stainless steel wire rod 1 is continuously moved while imparting constant tension by passing through pinch rollers 2 and solution heat treatment is executed by a heating means 4, while the wire rod 1 is moved in a bright heating pipe 3 filling up NH3 decomposition gas having <=-20 deg.C dew-point. Successively, by rapidly cooling the above pipe 3 through oil having the prescribed temp. in an oil quenching vessel 5, the solution heat treated wire rod 1 is indirectly rapid-cooled and quenched. Next, tempering is executed by cooling after heating in a heating means 6 and the wire rod is wound on a winding block 7 and cut off in the prescribed shaft length. In this way, the titled steel wire having no development of bending and a little dispersion of hardness, etc., among the products and further a small drop in the hardness, can be produced by a simple process in a short time.
