Insulating building blocks are made by placing preformed concrete blocks 12, in a mould 10 such that a major face 16 of each block 12 is spaced from a porous wall 18. Expandable plastics material (e.g. polystyrene) is charged into the gaps 14, and expanded by passing steam through the walls 18. The expanded plastics is keyed to the blocks 12, preferably aided by undercut recesses 20 therein. The mould may have a hydraulically raisable top-plate 26, with charging ports which are selectively closable by hydraulically displaceable plugs 59 and engageable by charging guns 50, which are reciprocable by rams 54. The mould's base and end wall(s) may be hydraulically displaceable. <IMAGE> |
