Generation of pulses for reading recorded data - using shaping circuit to generate pulses defining length of data elements read out from tape

A magnetic digital signal recording system has a facility for generating the reference clock signals required for read out of multi-length characters. The system is designed to provide accuracy of readout when length variations and speed variations occur. The output of a pick-up (1) is transmitted over a read stage (2) to a converter stage (7) that generates a shaped pulse (PF). A pulse generator circuit (10) produces a series (12) of pulses that define the length of the data elements taken from the tape. A further pulse shaping stage (16) generates reference clock pulses for the decoder circuit (19).
