PURPOSE:To accelerate the desulfurization reactio of molten Fe- or Ni-base metal by using a container lined with a CaO-base refractory to burn out the refractory, which is then reacted with the molten metal when the molten metal is refined by desulfurization. CONSTITUTION:When molten Fe- or Ni-base metal is refined by desulfurization, a container for the refining is lined with a refractory having a composition consisting of >90% CaO, <1% SiO2, <5% Fe2O3 and a very small amount of an alkali metallic oxide such as Na2O or K2O as a burning-out regulator. The refractory is manufactured by blending electromelted calcareous clinker, sintered calcareous clinker, synthetic dolomite clinker, etc., molding the blend into bricks of a regular shape, and calcining the bricks. The molten metal to be desulfurized contains <=1 kinds of deoxidizing component such as >0.05% C, >0.1% Si or >0.02% Al. When the lined refractory is burned out, CaO is reduced to Ca, which is then converted into CaS to cause a desulfurization reaction. |
