PURPOSE:To enhance the formation and the work efficiency of a storage battery, and increase the performance of the battery by pouring an electrolyte of low specific gravity into a storage battery during the formation of non-formed plates after the battery is assembled with the plates, and pouring an adjustment electrolyte into the battery after the end of the formation. CONSTITUTION:The specific gravity of sulfuric acid of an electrolyte 11 contained in a formation-electrolyte sulfuric acid container 10 is adjusted to low value. At the same time, the electrolyte 11 is directly cooled by means of a cooler 20. After a battery 1 containing no electrolyte is located at a given position, a valve 12 is opened and a formation liquid 11 is poured into the battery 1. The valve 12 is left opened while the battery 1 filled with the liquid 11 undergoes formation with a power source 9 through a feeding wire 8 for a given period of time. Since both the cooling of the battery 1, and the specific gravity of the formation liquid contained in the battery 1 become constant, the formation proceeds efficiently. When the formation of about 120-140% of the theoretical electricity quantity is achieved, the valve 12 is closed, a valve 12' is opened, and an adjustment electrolyte 17 is poured from a regulated electrolysis sulfuric acid container 16 into the battery 1 so as to adjust the specific gravity of the electrolyte contained in the battery 1 to the final one. |
