Appts.for sepg. liq-solids mixts. contg. magnetisable particles combines filtering with magnetic separation. The magnetic system is immediately adjacent to the mechanical or filtering sepg. system. Pref. an ascending endless filter belt receives a feed of liq. contg. magnetisable particles discharged onto the belt immediately above the underlying magnets, which may be permanent or electro magnets. The magnetisable particles are thus immediately drawn onto the belt, and ascend together with a proportion of the liq. to pass over a suction chamber where the residual liq. is extracted from the particles. Applicn. includes the sepn. of magnetite and ferrosilicon suspensions from the chemical industry or process water from steel rolling mills. The arrangement enables maximum advantage to be developed from the magnetic system itself by close contact with the separation surface and, due to the arrangement shown, also disposes of the majority of the liq. by simple gravity , leaving only a smaller proportion to be extracted through the vacuum filter.
