The appts. comprises a cooking pan (10) which can be inserted between a base (16) and an overhanging hood (20) into the working position. The hood (20) may incorporate a viewing window (14) and contains a microwave source and a wave distributor and has a seal fitting around the top edge of the pan when this is in the working position, to prevent the escape of microwaves. Pref. the base has a reception plate for the pan which can be raised mechanically or electromechanically to bring the top edge of the pan into contact with the seal. The reception plate may incorporate an additional electric heating element. The appts. is designed for rapid heating up of prepared foods taken straight from a freezer.
