The appts. uses an automated cutter which has its depth of cutting adjusted in response to sheath thickness, which is continuously monitored as the cable is drawn past the cutting unit. This method allows quick sheath removal with easy recovery of the sheath material for recycling. The thickness of the sheath (3) is measured by a transducer (6), for example an inductance type transducer, and the transducer output is accepted by an electronic circuit (CR) which provides a drive signal (11) to an actuator (8) which positions the cutting tool (2). The position of the actuator is monitored and fed back (7) to the controller circuit (CR) for precise positioning of the cutting tool, in response to set input (10) and transducer data.
