A heat exchanger (4) flowed through by water is arranged in a waste-gas duct (1). Provided outside the waste-gas duct is a pressure vessel (8) which has a water chamber (9) and a steam chamber (10) and serves for the generation of steam. The water chamber (9) of the pressure vessel (8) is connected to the heat exchanger (4). Via an overflow valve (18), which is provided in a steam line (16) connected to the steam chamber (10), the pressure in the pressure vessel (8) is regulated depending upon the temperature of the waste gas behind the heat exchanger (4). In this case, the pressure is kept to a value which corresponds to a minimum temperature of the water flowing to the heat exchanger (4), which temperature is dependent upon the waste gas temperature, in order fully to utilise the waste gas heat with a simultaneous reduction in the low-temperature corrosion. <IMAGE>
