The metal shell (1) in the form of a pipe of oblong cross-section contains a metal plate (3) and a wear- resistant composite material (2). The shell pref. made of low-carbon steel, the plate (3), and the composite material which is pref. tungsten carbide in a nickel/ manganese/copper alloy (2) are diffusion-joined one to another. Such lining units protect surfaces exposed to intensive abrasive wear by solids, gases, and liquids e.g. the working surfaces of a blast furnace. The plate may be of constant cross-section, wedge shaped or undulating.
