A tire loader comprises bead engaging shoes reciprocable along guided radially projecting from a movable frame(99). Each shoe(50) is driven by a link of adjustable length, one end of which is pivoted to the shoe, and the other of which is pivoted to a rotatable drive plate(27). Each link makes an angle with the associated guide so that rotation of the plate in one direction drives the shoes outwardly and rotation in the opposite direction drives them inwardly. The plate is rotated by a piston and cylinder arrangement and the arc of movement of the plate is limited by stops, the positions of which are adjustable to adjust the length of travel of the shoes.
