A container, receiver or tanker for transporting liquefied gases at very low temps. has an insulation of foam with a flexible internal metallic cladding, the stresses of which, set up by variations in temp. are transmitted to the outer structure by its attachments. The insulation includes a prim. internal layer of polyurethane foam reinforced three-dimensionally with glass fibres which project from the edges of the blocks of foam and facilitate bonding. Beneath this and outside it, a sec. external layer of similar insulating material is secured to the internal shell of the shipp or to the structure of the container, and is bonded to it. A prim. cladding formed by a membrane of steel with a high nickel content and having a low coefft. of expansion with resistance to low temperatures is in contact with the interior surface of the primary insulating layer. Prevents the stresses set up by expansion and contraction from fracturing the metal cladding or membrane. The fastenings of the membrane allow it to float or slide on the foam since it is only fixed at the angles to the vessel. The channel for the tongue and groove fastenings also serve as leakage detectors, showing up any penetration of the liquid at low temperature or gas through the cladding into the insulation.
|
